Hello to Akumalam Project donors,
Greetings from Miss Rita on behalf of the beneficiaries of your efforts, viz, Akumalam community and vicinity.
Following, thanks to your efforts ,is a brief report of recent accomplishments at Akumlam.
Work continued at the newly erected A.C.L. (Akumalam community library) specifically, reenforcement and painting of the walls was done and completed on august 27th 2011. Still regarding the library, on april 9th 2012, I travelled to Douala to claim 46 cartons of books destined for the A.C.L. These books were delivered at Akumlam on april 11th, more shelves were added to the library to accomodate the books on april 13th and 14th 2012 and on april 17th we displayed the books in the library.
Further efforts were guided towards paying school fees for a handful of needy and or orphan pupils in schools in Akumalam, Alabukam and Alatakoh, where we paid fees for 34 pupils in Akumlam, 17 in Alatakoh and 8 in Alabukam. Fees were also paid for two students from secondary schools , namely Christabel Nchang and Yeriman Edmond from Sarl vocational college Atuafon. All this was completed on february 7th 2012. This activity was cooordinated and carried out by Pa Akenji , the Chairman(Celestine) and myself.
Cost details of this operation, as are other details, are enlisted below in the cost section of this report.
Uniforms were also provided to some of the pupils of these schools, to 9 boys and 8 girls from Akumlam, 6 boys and 7 girls from Alatakoh, 2 boys and 2 girls from Alabukam these uniforms were handed to them on february 23rd 2012.
Regarding upcoming projects, our goal is to realise the following objectives within six months:
1) Provide the library with ;
-Electricity, computers, USB sticks, digital camera and a bigger signboard. We also intend to introduce an adult school and the use of library cards, for the users of the library.
2) Enhance enrollment at the school by;
-employing more teachers, issuing scholarships to outstanding students, paying 50% of pupils fees, constructing a play ground for pupils.
The various costs incurred in the above operations and other expenditures were; Painting and enforcement of the library walls: 150.000 frs CFA.
School fees for 34, 17, 8 pupils from Akumlam, Alabukam and Alatakoh respectively for a total of : 413.000 frsCFA.
Uniforms for 8girls & 9boys from Akumlam, 7 girls & 6 boys from Alatakoh, 2 boys & 2 girls from Alabukam (4.000 for male outfit and 3.000 frsCFA for girls ) a total of : 119.000 frsCFA .
My trip to Douala to claim the books had the following costs;
Trip to and fro, Bamenda – Douala: 10.000 frs CFA.
Cost of phone traffic while in Douala: 2.000 frs CFA.
For Mr. Michael’s phone traffic and services as a mediator; 6.0000 frs CFA.
Transportation of the books from Douala port to Douala city; 40.000 frs CFA.
Auxillary costs sustained for library purposes and other school projects include;
Purchasing a table, 17.000 frsCFA, Internet fee , 4.000 frsCFA, scanning documents , 1,500 frsCFA, snapshots 2.000 frsCFA, library stamp 2.000 frs CFA, gardening around the library, 10.000 frs CFA, cost of various trips to neighbouring schools to select students, pay their fees, deliver uniform and visit town libraries 4,500 frsCFA.
We conclude this report by recalling that on february 24th we received a letter of gratitude from the staff of Catholic school Alatakoh , in which they expressed enormous gratitude for the help offered to some of their pupils. On that same note the staff and parents of the pupils of Akumalam also expressed , through a letter which they delivered to us, profound appreciation for your efforts.
