One busy week in Cameroon!
Mar 6th, 2016 by Inga Vockenroth
Beginning of February, Anye, Luis and I traveled to Cameroon to visit our project. We distributed about 300 kg of donations in kind and looked at all the different parts of our project in detail to assess the status and make plans for the future. Most of the time we talked to people to get their ideas and make plans for the future together.
Summary:
Schools: We visited all 4 schools and talked to teachers and pupils alike and distributed pens, pencils, school bags, balloons and some stuffed animals for the little ones. We also gave a lesson about teeth hygiene with two classes.
Friendship Cup: As in former years, a soccer match of 4 Teams of kids was organized (read more soon…)
Sewing centre: We officially opened the sewing centre. For this we invited the community and had some speeches, singing, dancing and of course nice food! We hired 2 local women to help us with the running of the centre. One will be responsible for the management of the centre and the theoretical sewing lessons, the other will take care about the practical education. First customers for school uniforms were already there!
Library: In 2012 we opened a library close to the primary school. Now we want to move the books to the upper floor of the sewing centre, to maintain only one building. We also hired an unemployed teacher as librarian to take care of the daily running and additional teaching duties.
Water Well: Our well next to the sewing centre was repaired while we visited and now we have again running water.
Further plans:
For the library we want to get computers to have a reading and learning room with WiFi. During our visit we met some students that meet in a disused classroom after hours to study, they were very interested.
We want to enlarge the sewing centre and get additional machines with more functions. Additionally we are thinking about widening our portfolio to other clothes apart from school uniforms.
More books for the library are always needed. For every age and if possible also children’s picture books and small toys for a nursery.
And of course we will continue to support the needy children with money for the school fees and with the school uniforms.
